Description

RESTORED MILL RIOGORDO MALAGA ANDALUCIA
This beautiful 800 year old restored olive mill is tucked away in a secluded and peaceful location amongst the ancient olive groves of rural Axarquia. The history of this mill goes back to the days of the Muslims and in 1270. A.D. was returned to the Christians by the Catholic Kings. The molina was in use till 1954 when the cooperatives in RioGordo took over and continued the work.

The present owners have lovingly and carefully restored the property in traditional style, taking great care to keep all the original features, and using only traditional materials in order to preserve it´s unique ambience. Ceilings are all beamed with eucalyptus poles, and floors have either handmade terracotta tiles or the original stone, whilst all the windows have wooden shutters.

The property comprises of two houses: The Millhouse and The Farmhouse although it would be very simple to convert into one beautifully spacious house."

The Millhouse:
The main entrance is into the actual milling room where all the original equipment is still present, from the huge millstones, to the ancient water heating "Caldera" and the Olive press. The floors are of the original stone. The living room has an open stone fireplace, and many features. Double doors open out to the covered terrace. The dining area has a double-height vaulted ceiling, stairs to bedroom 3/study, with fitted storage cupboards under, and double doors to rear courtyard garden. Kitchen is fully fitted with double sink, gas hob, electric oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and worktops. Door out to a fully equipped summer kitchen with Bbq, and outdoor dining area on a lovely covered terrace.
External stairs lead up to a roof terrace with the most amazing views all round.
Back on the ground floor through the double doors we get into the lovely walled courtyard where there is a good size laundry room, with sink and washing machine. Next to it is a workshop, also a covered veranda.
Through an archway from the dining area we reach the double aspect master bedroom with en-suite shower room, guest toilet, and a second double bedroom with en-suite shower room.

The Farmhouse:
On the ground floor you enter a large dining hall leading through an arch to a pretty, well equipped kitchen/breakfast room. With the old bread oven, modern full gas cooker, microwave oven, large fridge/freezer, double sink unit, cupboards and worktops, table and chairs.
Off the dining hall to the left is the large split-level sitting room. This used to be the donkey stables, and overlooks and opens into the rear walled lovely garden. There is a corner wood burning stove, plenty of comfortable furniture and two full sized built-in day beds ready for that siesta!
At the rear of the dining hall is a shower room/w..c. and a stone staircase leads up to 3 Bedrooms.
Bedroom 1) Double with an en-suite shower room
Bedroom 2) Twin or double
Bedroom 3) Single (or bunk-beds)
Outside there is a further dining terrace with BBQ, and some steps lead down to the beautiful 10 x 5 meter swimming pool. It has a salt water filtration system, and easy thermal cover. The south facing pool terrace has a shower, and good sun-bed area all round, with stunning views of the mountains and olive groves. Below the pool is a toilet/changing room, and the pump room.
Oil fired central heating is installed throughout both houses, and the boiler which supplies the hot water (both independently controlled) is housed in a separate boiler room in the courtyard.
All the bedrooms have ceiling fans, also the Millhouse sitting room.
Sat. T.V. is installed in both houses.
Broadband/Internet connection.
Good parking area. Wonderful flower gardens and many varieties of flowering trees all around.
Fruit trees, including Lemons, Oranges, Figs, Pomegranates, and space for a vegetable garden.
The property is surrounded by mature olive groves, with reputedly the oldest olive tree (over 2,000 years old) in the area, in the grounds.
There are 2 access roads to the property in very good condition, and distance to the village is approx. 3km.

Riogordo is in the Axarquía, equidistant at 35 kilometres from Malaga, Vélez and Antequera. It has two quite separate barrios: the Barrio Alto, or Cerrillo, and the Barrio Bajo, or The Plaza. The houses on both sides of the hilly streets are low with interior patios, wells and stables. The town has a number of old family homes dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, and many of those houses in and around the central square have niches built in, housing virgins, saints or the image of the Crucified Christ. The most traditional of the old streets are calle Deán de Rojas, calle La Santa and calle El Horno. The name of the town - the Fat River - would suggest an origin in the dense vegetation along the banks of the Río de la Cueva, rather than the volume of water that flows through it. But the more accepted theory is that the name derives from the rich mineral water that comes out of an interior cavity, making the water seem fat. It is also believed that this was the very reason for the first Neolithic settlers choosing this place. Remains from this period have been found in the Tajo de Gomer, with Bronze Age remains discovered in the Cerro de la Capellanía. There is evidence too of Phoenician settlement in the region, while Roman mosaics have been found in the Villas of Auta, dating from the third century. It was the Moors, nevertheless, that were responsible for the economic growth of the town and the strengthening of the Castle of Aute as a defensive fortress. The present location of the town is due to it having been the spot that the Catholic Monarchs camped on while conquering Vélez. The town was active in the fight against the French invaders during the War of Independence, one of the local heroes of the time being a man known as The Priest of Riogordo, whose reputation as a guerrilla fighter spread far and wide.
